Characters and Their Main Purposes
- Oberon: King of the Fairies. His main purpose is to resolve the conflict between the lovers and restore order in the forest.
- Puck (Robin Goodfellow): Oberon's mischievous servant. He causes chaos with magic, but also helps to resolve the lovers' confusion.
- Titania: Queen of the Fairies. She is in conflict with Oberon over a young boy, and her enchantment leads to comical confusion.
- Lysander: A young Athenian lover who is in love with Hermia but is mistakenly enchanted to fall for Helena.
- Hermia: A young Athenian woman in love with Lysander. She defies her father’s wish to marry Demetrius.
- Demetrius: Initially in love with Hermia, but through magical interference, he falls in love with Helena.
- Helena: A young woman in love with Demetrius, though he initially rejects her. She is often portrayed as insecure and persistent in love.
- Egeus: Hermia's father, who insists she marry Demetrius, even though Hermia loves Lysander.
- Nick Bottom: A weaver and actor who is transformed into a donkey by Puck. He becomes the object of Titania's enchanted affection.
- Peter Quince: A carpenter and the leader of the play-within-a-play group. He directs the performance of "Pyramus and Thisbe".
- Other Mechanicals (e.g., Snug, Snout, Starveling, and Flute): The group of Athenian tradesmen who perform the play "Pyramus and Thisbe" for the Duke's wedding.
